General Acupuncture Questions
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing and restore balance. These points lie along pathways called meridians, which are believed to conduct vital energy (Qi) throughout the body.
From a modern scientific perspective, acupuncture works by stimulating nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which triggers the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals (endorphins), improves blood flow, and activates the nervous system's self-healing mechanisms. Research shows it can influence neurotransmitters, hormones, and immune function, making it effective for a wide range of conditions.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients find acupuncture surprisingly comfortable. The needles used are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair—much thinner than needles used for injections or blood draws. You may feel a slight pinch or tingling sensation when the needle is inserted, but this typically passes within seconds.
Once the needles are in place, most people feel deeply relaxed. Some describe a heavy, achy, or warm sensation around the needle sites, which practitioners call "de qi"—a sign that the point is being activated. Many patients even fall asleep during treatments!
Is acupuncture backed by scientific research?
Yes. Thousands of clinical studies have investigated acupuncture's effectiveness, and major health organizations now recognize its value for many conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists over 100 conditions for which acupuncture may be beneficial, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) acknowledges strong evidence for its use in pain management, nausea, and headaches.
Acupuncture is increasingly integrated into mainstream healthcare settings, including major hospitals, cancer centers, and pain management clinics. While we don't fully understand all the mechanisms involved, the clinical evidence and thousands of years of successful use support its effectiveness.
What's the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
While both use thin needles, acupuncture is a complete medical system based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, diagnosing imbalances and treating the whole person. Acupuncturists complete extensive training (typically a 3-4 year master's degree) and are licensed healthcare providers.
Dry needling is a technique some physical therapists and chiropractors use to release muscle trigger points. It focuses specifically on musculoskeletal pain and doesn't incorporate the diagnostic framework or holistic approach of acupuncture. Licensed acupuncturists can address a much broader range of conditions beyond just muscle pain.
Treatment Details
How long does an acupuncture treatment take?
Your first visit typically lasts 75-90 minutes, as it includes a comprehensive health history, discussion of your concerns, physical examination, and your first treatment. Dr. Chen takes time to understand your complete health picture, not just your main complaint.
Follow-up appointments usually last 45-60 minutes. This includes a brief check-in about your progress, the acupuncture treatment itself (needles typically remain in place for 20-30 minutes), and any additional therapies like cupping or heat therapy if appropriate.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies based on your condition, how long you've had it, and your overall health. Acute conditions (recent injuries, sudden illness) often respond quickly—you may notice improvement within 2-4 treatments. Chronic conditions that have developed over months or years typically require more sessions to achieve lasting results.
A common initial treatment plan involves 6-8 sessions over 4-6 weeks, scheduled 1-2 times per week. Many patients experience significant improvement within this timeframe. Some continue with monthly maintenance treatments to sustain their results and support overall wellness. Dr. Chen will discuss realistic expectations and create a personalized treatment plan during your first visit.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first appointment begins with an in-depth consultation. Dr. Chen will ask detailed questions about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, diet, sleep patterns, stress levels, and any other health concerns. She may examine your tongue and take your pulse—traditional diagnostic techniques that provide valuable information about your internal health.
Based on this assessment, she'll explain her diagnosis from both traditional Chinese medicine and Western perspectives, and discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Your first acupuncture treatment will follow, typically focusing on your primary concerns while beginning to address underlying imbalances.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up to access acupuncture points on your arms, legs, and back. Avoid tight jeans or restrictive clothing. You won't need to fully undress—we can work around most clothing. However, for treatments requiring access to your back, we provide draping to ensure your comfort and privacy.
Also avoid wearing strong perfumes or colognes, as some patients are sensitive to scents in the quiet treatment environment.
Should I do anything to prepare for my treatment?
Eat a light meal or snack 1-2 hours before your appointment—don't come on an empty stomach or overly full. Stay well-hydrated before and after your session. Avoid alcohol or recreational substances for 24 hours before treatment, as they can interfere with your body's response.
Bring a list of any medications, supplements, or herbs you're taking. If you're seeing us for a specific injury or pain, wear or bring clothing that allows easy access to the affected area. Finally, try to arrange your schedule so you don't rush to or from your appointment—giving yourself time to relax enhances the treatment's effectiveness.
How will I feel after treatment?
Most patients feel deeply relaxed, calm, and often sleepy after acupuncture—this is a sign your nervous system has shifted into healing mode. Some people experience an immediate improvement in their symptoms, while others notice gradual changes over the following 24-48 hours.
Occasionally, you might feel slightly tired, lightheaded, or experience temporary intensification of symptoms before improvement occurs—this is called a "healing response" and typically passes within a day. Drinking plenty of water and resting after treatment helps your body integrate the changes.
Conditions & Results
What conditions can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture can effectively address a wide range of conditions. Our most common treatment areas include:
- Pain conditions: Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, arthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia
- Headaches: Migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches
- Stress & mental health: Anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress management
- Women's health: Menstrual irregularities, PMS, fertility support, pregnancy support, menopause symptoms
- Digestive issues: IBS, acid reflux, nausea, bloating, constipation
- Respiratory: Allergies, asthma, chronic sinusitis
- Other: Fatigue, immune support, post-surgery recovery, sports injuries
Can acupuncture help with stress and anxiety?
Absolutely. Acupuncture is highly effective for stress and anxiety management. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" mode), reduces cortisol levels, and promotes the release of calming neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA.
Patients often report feeling calmer, sleeping better, and handling daily stressors more effectively after just a few treatments. Many find acupuncture more appealing than medication because it has no side effects and addresses the root causes of stress rather than just masking symptoms. Regular treatments can provide lasting improvements in emotional resilience and overall well-being.
Will acupuncture cure my chronic condition?
Acupuncture can significantly improve chronic conditions and, in many cases, provide long-lasting relief or even resolution. However, "cure" depends on the condition, its duration, and individual factors. For some conditions—like chronic migraines or certain types of pain—acupuncture can provide dramatic, lasting improvements. For progressive conditions like arthritis, it may slow progression and effectively manage symptoms.
Our goal is to help you achieve the best possible quality of life, whether that means complete resolution, significant reduction in symptoms, decreased reliance on medications, or better ability to manage your condition. We'll discuss realistic expectations during your initial consultation.
Can I use acupuncture alongside Western medical treatment?
Yes, acupuncture works beautifully as a complement to conventional medical care. Many of our patients combine acupuncture with treatments from their doctors, physical therapists, or other healthcare providers. In fact, integrative care often produces better results than any single approach alone.
Acupuncture can help reduce medication side effects, speed recovery from surgery or injury, enhance the effectiveness of other therapies, and address aspects of health that conventional medicine may not fully resolve. We're happy to communicate with your other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.
Safety & Hygiene
Is acupuncture safe?
When performed by a licensed, trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is extremely safe. Serious complications are exceedingly rare—far lower than the risk associated with many common medications or medical procedures. Licensed acupuncturists complete extensive training in anatomy, needle technique, safety protocols, and point location to ensure treatments are both effective and safe.
Minor side effects like slight bruising at needle sites or temporary soreness can occur but are uncommon. We take detailed health histories to identify any contraindications and adjust treatments accordingly to ensure your safety.
Are the needles sterile?
Yes, absolutely. We use only single-use, pre-sterilized, disposable needles that are individually packaged. Each needle is used once and then immediately disposed of in a medical sharps container. This eliminates any risk of cross-contamination or infection.
Our clinic follows strict hygiene protocols, including thorough cleaning of treatment rooms between patients, use of clean linens for each patient, and proper hand hygiene. Your safety is our top priority.
Are there any situations where acupuncture isn't recommended?
Acupuncture is safe for most people, but we take extra precautions in certain situations. If you have a pacemaker or electrical implant, we'll avoid using electrical stimulation with the needles. If you're on blood thinners, you may bruise more easily, but treatment is still safe with modified techniques.
We're experienced in treating pregnant women, but certain points are avoided during pregnancy. If you have a severe bleeding disorder, active infection at potential needle sites, or extremely fragile skin, we'll modify the treatment or recommend waiting until the condition resolves. Always inform us of any health conditions or concerns during your initial consultation.
Cupping Therapy
What is cupping therapy and how does it work?
Cupping therapy involves placing special cups on your skin to create suction. This draws blood flow to the area, releases tight muscles and fascia, reduces inflammation, and promotes healing. We use three techniques: traditional fire cupping (briefly warming the cup to create suction), modern pump cupping (using a manual pump), and moving cupping (gliding the cups along muscle groups).
The suction lifts and separates tissue layers, allowing fresh blood, oxygen, and nutrients to reach areas that may have been compressed or stagnant. Many patients find cupping deeply relieving for muscle tension, especially in the back, shoulders, and neck.
Will cupping leave marks? How long do they last?
Yes, cupping typically leaves circular marks that can range from light pink to deep purple, depending on the degree of stagnation in the tissue. These aren't bruises in the traditional sense—they're caused by bringing old, stagnant blood to the surface, which actually promotes healing. Darker marks usually indicate areas that needed treatment most.
The marks are painless and typically fade within 3-7 days, occasionally lasting up to 10 days. They become lighter and faster-fading with regular treatments. If you have an event where you'll be wearing revealing clothing, let us know and we can adjust the treatment timing or avoid cupping in visible areas.
Does cupping hurt?
Cupping creates a strong pulling sensation but shouldn't be painful. Most patients describe it as an intense but pleasant feeling, like a deep tissue massage. The pressure can be adjusted to your comfort level—we always work within your tolerance and check in frequently.
After treatment, the area may feel tender or sensitive for a day or two, similar to post-workout soreness. This is normal and indicates that healing processes are activated. Staying hydrated and applying gentle heat (like a warm bath) can enhance comfort and results.
Herbal Medicine
What is Chinese herbal medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine uses natural plant materials (roots, leaves, flowers, bark, seeds) to support healing and restore balance. Unlike single-herb supplements you might find at a health store, Chinese herbal formulas combine multiple herbs in precise ratios to create synergistic effects—each herb enhances the others while minimizing potential side effects.
These formulas have been refined over centuries and are customized to your specific constitution and condition. We offer herbs in several convenient formats: traditional decoctions (teas), concentrated powders, capsules, and tablets.
Are Chinese herbs safe?
When prescribed by a licensed herbalist trained in Chinese medicine, herbal formulas are very safe. Dr. Chen has extensive training in herbal pharmacology, herb-drug interactions, and contraindications. We source our herbs from reputable suppliers who test for pesticides, heavy metals, and contaminants.
We'll review all your medications and supplements to avoid any interactions, and we'll discuss any allergies or sensitivities. Herbs are prescribed in carefully calculated doses and formulas are adjusted as your condition improves. Like any medicine, herbs should be taken as directed and you should report any unusual reactions.
Can I take herbal medicine with my prescription medications?
In most cases, yes, but this requires professional evaluation. Some herbs can interact with certain medications, either enhancing or reducing their effects. This is why it's essential to work with a qualified herbalist who understands both herbal medicine and pharmaceutical interactions.
During your consultation, we'll review all your medications in detail. In many cases, we can safely combine herbal medicine with pharmaceuticals—and sometimes the herbs allow you to reduce medication dosages over time (always in coordination with your prescribing physician). We'll never recommend stopping prescribed medications without your doctor's approval.
